Have you heard of the concept of having a word of the year? The idea is to have one word to guide and focus your goals and intentions. To me it sums things up and gives me a mantra of sorts.
I was first introduced to the concept of a word of the year through scrapbooking and Ali Edwards. Ali has created several projects that her community has gotten involved with, including her One Little Word project. I’m sure Ali isn’t the first one to come up with a word for the year, but again that’s how I came across the idea.
My word of the year tends to be a simple representation of my goals. Just one word I can keep in mind to easily refer to.
When choosing a word I sort of just let it come to me. I know it sounds a little hokey but that’s how it happens. I think about my goals and what I want to achieve, and I find a word that I think sums it up.
2019 Word of the Year
Before sharing my word for 2020 I wanted to share about my 2019 word (it’s relevant, I promise).
For 2019 I chose the word “Wander”. You’re probably thinking I wanted to travel or explore more, which I did, but the word wander held a lot more for me.
I saw being able to wander as being able to chose my own path. Truth be told, the word came from Disney (because of course it did). Specifically it came from the song “Part of Your World” from The Little Mermaid. “Wandering free. Wish I could be, part of that world”.
I guess it’s kind of my thing to have a piece of jewelry that I use as sort of a totem for my goals. Throughout my senior year of college I had a necklace that served this purpose and I wore it just about everyday. For my word last year, and continuing this year I have a bracelet with the words “Wandering Free”.
My 2020 Word of the Year
The reason I told you about my 2019 word is that my 2020 word is “Free”. When I was trying to come up with a word for 2020, free just kept coming back to me. It is a bit of a continuation of last year’s word, but free holds a lot more meaning to me.
I want to be financially free and lower my debt and expenses.
I want to be location free and be able to live and work and travel wherever I want.
I want to feel freer mentally, not be so hard on myself, and free myself from some of my negative thoughts.
Will I be able to achieve all of this in a year? Maybe, maybe not. But I’m going to try and at least get a start on things.
Do you set a word for the year?
