Dress Like Jess – New Girl Inspired Style

Sharing is caring!

New Girl has its series finale a couple of years ago, but in this time of being quarantined, the show has seen a resurgence due to its availability on Netflix. I have been considering sharing how to dress like Jess for a while, but now seems like the perfect time with more interest in the show.

Jessica Day or Jess is the lead character of New Girl played by Zooey Deschanel. After finding out her boyfriend was cheating on her, she answers a Craigslist ad for a roommate. Jess thought the ad was placed by women but it turned out to be three men looking for a roommate. Jess still decided to move in.

Besides the funny dialogue and lovable cast, one of the major standouts of the show is Jess’s wardrobe. Here is how you can get the Jess look yourself.

I sometimes use affiliate links on Thoroughly Contemporary. That means if you make a purchase through one of these links I make a small commission at no extra cost to you.

Where to shop

You can find pieces Jess would wear just about anywhere. But to really get the look try:

J Crew

What to wear

All the colors

Jess’s wardrobe is extremely colorful. She tends to wear a lot of primary tones but no color seems off limits. When she is seen wearing something more neutral, it tends to be a graphic black and white outfit that still makes major impact.

Pattern play

Jess rocks a lot of polka dots. And stripes. And plaids. Jess isn’t afraid of patterned clothing, so you shouldn’t be either!

No Pants Allowed

Okay, Jess does occasionally wear pants. But more often than not, she is seen in a dress, skirt, or shorts. When it comes to dresses and skirts, Jess tends to go with an A-line silhouette, which is a flattering shape on most people.

Jess loves layers especially her cardigans. On the show Nick even once said “You wear a cardigan over a cardigan”. Add a colorful cardigan over a pretty dress for a signature Jess look.

Another great layering piece for Jess is coats. For living in Los Angeles Jess has an amazing coat collection. Rich, beautiful colors are as important here as they are for the rest of her wardrobe.

Keep it flat

Jess is always seen wearing adorable ballet flats. So grab a pair, or a few in different colors, and coordinate with all your cute looks.

Cardigan, Skirt, Flats

Jess’s outfits sometimes have a bit of a nautical flair. Sometimes it is based on her choice of red and blue pieces, and other times her outfits have literal nautical nods.

Sweater, Skirt, Flats

To me, this is quintessential Jess. A colorful sweater, a cute, short a-line skirt (with polka dots), and fun ballet flats.

Dress, Shoes (similar)

This dress says Jess to me because of the subtle polka dot design and the navy and green shades. I added some red flats because that seems like what Jess would do.

I’ve rounded up a bunch of pieces that say Jess to me. Look through them and see what sparks your interest!

Talk about a seriously cute concept for a post. I love Jess’ style in the show, and how whimsical and feminine it always is. She’s got a quirky fashion sense and I admire her ability to pattern mix and wear bright colors like a pro. You put together some fabulous looks inspired by her!
