New Beauty Buys – October 2018

Sharing is caring!

I’ve been on a bit of a makeup buying kick lately. With the combination of a new season and lots of great sales, I’ve picked up quite a few things. Here are some of my recent beauty buys and what I think of the products so far.

Foundation

NYX Can't Stop Won't Stop Foundation

NYX Can’t Stop Won’t Stop Foundation: This foundation claims to be full coverage and will stay matte for up to 24 hours. The great thing about this foundation is that it comes in 45 different shades, so there should be a match for most skin tones. Being a pale girl, I find that sometimes even the lightest makeup shade is still slightly too dark for me (yes I’m basically a vampire) but again, this foundation has a shade to suit almost anyone.

I really want to love this foundation, but so far I’m not sure. I’ve only used it a couple of times so I really can’t give a full review, but so far I’ve noticed it pooling up in my pores and breaking down easily if I get a little oily. A quick note about my skin: I say I have combination skin but really it’s more “normal” and just gets a little oily at times. I haven’t tried this foundation with a primer yet, but I sort of feel like I shouldn’t need one because it claims to be long wearing. I typically apply my foundations with my fingers but I’m thinking I’m going to have to try a brush or sponge with this one to see if it performs any better.

Eyes

Sharing some new drugstore makeup products I've purchased recently.

Cover Girl Lid Lock Up Eye Primer: I really like this eye primer so far. It kind of reminds me of the Urban Decay Primer Potion but this one seems to have a little more tackiness to it. My eye shadows held up really well and I think it helps make them pop.

NYX Epic Ink Eyeliner: This is a waterproof eyeliner pen, and I have the shade black. This eyeliner is a champ. It’s super easy to apply (though I have been doing liquid liner for years, so maybe take that with a grain of salt), really black, and stays put. I think it’s way better than the Kat Von D liner, which I have been using, and is less than half the price!

Wet n Wild Color Icon Eyeshadow Palette in Comfort Zone: I had previously tried some of the Wet n Wild 8 pan eyeshadow palettes when they came out years ago, but I actually never tried Comfort Zone. Now with the addition of two “transition” colors I decided to test it out.

These shadows are crazy pigmented! And under $5! I think this palette is especially great for fall with its warm brown tones, earthy greens, and even a burgundy shade. The only problem I have with it is that I find the transition colors to be a bit darker than I would like them. I’ll still definitely use them as just matte shadows, but I’ll probably pull in something else to use as a true transition shade.

Colourpop Super Shock Eyeshadows in Sailor (lighter shade) and Amaze (peachy tone): I’ve been wanting to try Colourpop for so long and I finally found some of the line at Ulta! I grabbed these two shadows mainly to use as toppers for other eyeshadows. I tried out Sailor but I haven’t tested Amaze yet (other than swatching on my hand). I really love the shimmery finish it gives to an eye look.

Bare Minerals Lash Domination Mascara: I picked up this mascara during the Beauty Brands 10.99 mascara sale, otherwise I probably wouldn’t have tried it (I’ve mentioned how much I love drugstore mascaras before). This mascara basically promises to do everything: lengthen, volumize, curl, and not smudge, flake, or clump. I feel like it’s just fine. Like it’s a fine basic mascara, but I don’t find it to be the miracle worker that it promises.

Lips

Liquid lipsticks: I recently grabbed four new lip colors: Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Patina (neutral rosy shade), L’oreal Infallible Pro Matte Liquid Lipstick in Candy Man (light brown toned pink), NYX Powder Puff Lippie in Teenage Dream (bright pink), and NYX Liquid Suede Metallic Matte in Pure Society (Metallic Burgundy).

I really like the way the Stila liquid lipstick applies. It goes on really smoothly but does make my lips feel a little dry later in the day.

The L’oreal color is nice and long-lasting, however, this is part of their chocolate collection, and does have a strong chocolate smell when you first apply it. If you’re not into that, you may want to skip this one.

The NYX Powder Puff is definitely my favorite. I don’t really notice anything powdery about it – it’s supposed to go on as a cream and have a powder like finish. I think it applies smoothly, lasts nicely, and I love this particular color.

The other NYX lip color I actually haven’t tried, but when I swatched it, I had to scrub kind of hard to get it off my hand. Judging by that I’d say it’s pretty long lasting.

I bought that NYX foundation, but I wasn’t great at choosing my color. I’ve heard nothing but good things about it, however, so I really want to give it a go. I need to use up my current foundation however.

    Great picks! x

Thanks! I think I may have picked up a shade a little too light for me so I’ve been mixing it with a darker foundation. I still need to give it a go with my real techniques sponge.

I’ve heard so much about the NYX Can’t stop won’t stop and has been on my list to try but I just bought Tarte so I gotta place it on pause. Its sad to hear that you feel like it breaks up and you have normal – oily skin. I’m a cross between normal and combination but not too oily except T-zone. This might end up working the same way on my skin too :/ I’ll have to wait and see more reviews on it. Thanks for your honest input 🙂

I’m honestly still playing with it. I think I may have bought a shade a little too light for me, so I’ve been mixing it with my L’oreal Infallible foundation which is a little too dark. It’s working well like this but I definitely need to figure out if I can make it work on it’s own.

Love your picks. I did not know Cover Girl had a lid primer. I’ll have to give it a try.
