Something I’ve been wanting to talk about on the blog is things to do around St. Louis. I think St. Louis has so much to offer but seems to get overlooked as a travel destination.
For this first installment I wanted to share about some new St. Louis experiences I had this weekend: the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House and Sugarfire Smokehouse.
The Butterfly House is located in Chesterfield, MO, which is about as far west St. Louis County as you can go (if you are unfamiliar with the area, St. Louis city is surrounded by St. Louis County to the north, west, and south). If you’ve been to a butterfly house before (I went to one in Houston previously) I think they are pretty similar. Still its a really cool experience that you’re probably not regularly getting.
We were told that it was over 80 degrees in the butterfly exhibit. Luckily, there was a coat room so we didn’t have to bake while we explored. For a winter day, or a really cold fall day like we had, it was a great indoor activity to do.
The exhibit is really beautiful: so many butterflies all around and tropical flowers everywhere. We were told there were over 2000 butterflies and they were from areas like Costa Rica. There is also an outdoor area where you can see local butterflies, however, it was too cold when we were there so there weren’t any butterflies around.
My friend’s two year-old daughter was with us. I think it is a really cool experience for kids, you just have to be conscious that they aren’t trying to touch the butterflies (it’s not allowed because it could hurt them).

After hanging out with the butterflies, we went to get a St. Louis specialty: barbecue! I know a lot of cities claim to have the best barbecue, but I’ve always enjoyed St. Louis’s. We headed to Sugarfire Smokehouse, and it was actually the first time I had been there. They have several locations across the area, and even in other states. We went to the original location in Olivette. I got the pulled pork sandwich and fries and it didn’t disappoint. Right next door is Sugarfire Pie so we had to stop in after lunch and check that out as well.

I hope you enjoy this new feature and if there’s ever any places in St. Louis that you are curious about, let me know!
